Essay, Poster and Declamation Competition amid Lockdown

International Year of Periodic Table (IYPT)

Chandigarh has a unique advantage to be surrounded by a number of research institutions, with a large number of scientists working in forefront areas of Science. Many of these Institutions have Fellows of the prestigious Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation one of the foremost Scientific Foundations of the World which boasts of nearly 26,000 scientists from 130 countries including 50 Nobel Laureates. The year 2019, the world celebrated 150 years of the Periodic Table of Elements which forms basis for classification of elements for better understanding of their properties and application. In Dmitri Mendeleev’s first periodic table in 1869, the elements were ordered according to atomic weight, and a pattern resulted where similar properties for elements recurred periodically. Subsequently, the periodic table was reorganized on the basis of increasing atomic number rather than on atomic weight. The revised table could be used to predict the properties of elements that had yet to be discovered! This led to the formulation of the periodic law, which states that the chemical properties of the elements are dependent on their atomic numbers. SPSTI Announced IYPT Events  in November 2019

SPSTI and Chandigarh Chapter of the Humboldt Foundation (AvH) decided to join hands to celebrate International Year of Periodic Table (IYPT 2019) by organizing a few events in schools and colleges with a view to inculcate in their students an interest in the Periodic Table, as well as science in general. This program is supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Chandigarh Administration. SPSTI earlier sent invitations to schools and colleges of Chandigarh to send the entries for various events.

We proposed to hold a series of events comprising of lectures, a quiz, poster-making and declamation competitions, in UT Chandigarh to mark the occasion. We conducted few lectures in schools and colleges on Periodic Table and the details are mentioned as updates on this page. The events were carried out with support of eminent Professors / Scientists belonging to AvH Foundation with the assistance from Prof. Dr. Alok Srivastava of Chemistry Department of Panjab University, Chandigarh and President of AvH Chandigarh Chapter and coordinated by Prof. Keya Dharamvir, retired Professor of Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh. These multiple events were earlier planned to culminate on Science Day, 2020, but due to some reasons it was postponed.
