Title of Talk: The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2021 and the Science Behind

Abstract of the Lecture: The 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded jointly to Professor Benjamin List from Max Planck Institute for Coal Research, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, and Professor David W. C. William from Princeton University, New Jersey, USA for the “development of asymmetric organocatalysis”. Exactly 20 years ago, in 2001, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Professors Barry K. Sharpless, William S. Knowles and Ryoji Noyori, for their work on “chirally catalyzed hydrogenation and oxidation reactions”. The 2005 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded for the “development of the metathesis method in organic synthesis” [metal catalysis], and the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for “palladium-catalyzed cross couplings in organic synthesis”. Thus, these four Nobel Prizes in Chemistry in this century so far indicates the significance and relevance of ‘chiral synthesis’ and ‘catalysis’ to academia and industry. In my talk, I will emphasize these two important aspects of synthetic chemistry and highlight the science behind the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2021.
