Abstract: There is lot of criticism about the quality of technical manpower being produced by the system of technical education in our country. Many studies reveal that only 25% of the output from the system is employable. It is in this context, the paper will highlight the expansion of technical education at different levels Viz: Craftsmen, diploma and degree levels. For clear understanding the requirements, the paper will provide details regarding knowledge-skill mix of technical manpower and system’s view point to analyze the strengths and weakness of the system. The paper also brings out competency profile of technical manpower at different levels and provides suggestions for revitalizing the system.
About the speaker: Professor L.N. Mittal is a Chartered Civil Engineer, did his M.Tech in Highway Engineering from Punjab Engineering college, Chandigarh and Ph.D from BITS, Pilani.He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers and Life Member of Indian Society of Technical Education and many other professional bodies. He has recently joined as Life Member of SPSTI.Dr Mittal is a professional of over Five decades of standing, widely travelled in India and abroad and contributed significantly in the field of technical & Vocational education at National and international levels. Besides Civil Engineering, His areas of specialization include: Curriculum Development, Industry -Academia Interface and Entrepreneurship Development. He is a recipient of many Awards and Recognitions in these areas. He has been consultant to UNESCO, AICTE, EdCIL,PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Employers’ Federation of India.
