Abstract: Polymers are extremely fascinating materials of the present time. Ever since their invention in the nineteenth century and subsequent steady growth, we have now available a large number of materials from this class available commercially for diverse applications with continued addition of more and more exotic members to the family. The first part of this talk relates to some basic concepts of polymeric materials which will be helpful in facilitating understanding the applications of a particular polymer. Important applications were described in some prominent commercial segments for different polymers in the second part to highlight their role in our lives today.Environment and health related concerns were also discussed.
